Notes on Online Course Registration (PEARL)

Important Must-Read Notes Regarding Course Registration
*Students can register for/delete courses as many times as they like within the online course registration period.
However, if an error occurs for any one of the courses that you have registered for, all registered courses become invalid. Make sure that there are no errors in your registration.

1. Online Timetable and Registration
PEARL students must register for courses every semester. For fall registration, register for courses offered in the Fall Semester, and likewise for spring registration, register for courses offered in the Spring Semester.

It is possible to register courses through the Academic Affairs Web System. The Academic Affairs Web System is accessible through keio.jp.

Note that only one class schedule for half-year intensive courses appears on the online timetable, and there is only one course registration number for each half-year intensive course. For the intensive course registration, if you enter this registration number, you will be registered for the both classes automatically.

2. Maximum Credit Registration Limit
The upper limit for course registration credits is 48 credits for both the first year and the second year.

3. Column A / Column B
Courses offered at PEARL are all listed in the “Column A” field.
Exception: The following courses are listed in the “Column B” field.
- You must register for courses for type A/B students delivered in Japanese as optional subjects (select from “B Column: 91”).  In order to register for those courses, you need to do submit a course registration form.
- You are a member of the Institute for Media and Communications Research (MediaCom) and are taking courses provided by the institute as optional subjects (select from “B Column: 95”).
- You are a member of the Teacher Training Center and are taking courses provided by the center as optional subjects (select from “B Column: 96”).

4. Course Registration Restriction, Adding/Deleting Courses
If the number of students who apply for a course exceeds the class limit, a lottery will be conducted.
If you are not selected in the lottery, your registration for that course will become invalid. In that case, you may register for additional courses (up to the maximum 48 credits for both the first year and the second year.). Refer to the course registration guide for detailed instructions.

5. Important Notes regarding Course Registration for Faculty of Economics PEARL Subjects
General Education
Multiple courses with the same name can be registered for, as long as they are taught by different lecturers or belong to different subject categories. Refer to the course registration guide.

Major Subjects
Multiple courses with the same name cannot be registered for, even if they are taught by different lecturers.

6. Submit Registration for Courses Outside Your Faculty form (Applies only to students registering for courses during the registration period at the beginning of April)
Students who are registering for major subjects that are only listed in timetables of other undergraduate faculties must submit an Application for Course Approval with their course registration during the specified period. (This excludes small seminar-style courses and Psychology 1 & 2.)

The prescribed forms are available in front of the Faculty of Economics bulletin board on the first floor corridor of the Fourth Building: Section B. Students must obtain the approval seal of the faculty member in charge of the course and follow other procedures according to the methods prescribed in the course registration guide.

7. Registration Errors on the Academic Affairs Web System
When students registered a wrong course, an error message will appear on the right of the screen. If there is an error in your registration, all of the courses you register for will become “Pending” or invalid. Make sure there are no errors in your registration.

8. Other Important Notes
You can make changes to the course registration as many times as you like during the online course registration period. Once the registration period is over, you may not make any changes to your registered courses. However, you are permitted to cancel some courses during the designated period of time in each somester. This applies only to certain courses, so make sure to read the course registration guide in advance.

All registered courses during the course registration period can be viewed on the “View Registered Courses” screen of the Academic Affairs Web System (individual inquiries on registration will not be answered). At this point, your list of registered courses may include courses that you will not be able to take (after the number of students for that course is adjusted) and courses that need to be deleted/corrected.

After the number of students are adjusted for each course, the results will be announced on the “For Keio Students” website. Students can check the list of courses they are registered for on the Academic Affairs Web System from the end of April to the beginning of May and the beginning of October.

After the results are announced, print out the “View Registered Courses” screen and check which courses you are registered for. It is the student’s responsibility to check and add/delete courses and correct errors within the specified period. The Academic Affairs Web System operates on a very simple error/validity detection system, thus all students must ensure and confirm that they have registered their courses correctly.

If your online course registration has not been properly completed or needs to be modified, the Hiyoshi Office of Student Services will send a Course Registration Confirmation Sheet to your current home address. If the address changes, please make sure to update your address through Academic Affairs Web System by mid April. 

Faculty of Economics: Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What shall I do if the message “Column A invalid” appears?
A. Check the course registration number on the timetable for your faculty/year level/rules and regulations for your undergraduate faculty. Based on the rules and regulations for each faculty, course names and number of credits may differ.

Q. I don’t recall registering for more than one course in the same class period, but why does the message “Conflict with timetable” appear?
A. Note that only one class schedule for half-year intensive courses appears on the online timetable. Beware if you are taking half-year intensive courses that have classes on separate days of the week (e.g., English Academic Skills 1).

Q. I don’t recall ever taking the course, but why does the message “Course completed” appear?
A. Even if the course names are different, some courses are deemed essentially the same (e.g., “Life Science” and “Life Science - Current Status and Perspectives”). You are able to register for “completed courses,” or courses that are deemed essentially the same, if you register them as optional subjects.
